Ceremonial Tortillas

The ceremonial or painted tortilla is one of the most emblematic traditions of the native Otomi peoples of the states of Guanajuato and Querétaro.

This project formally began with the support of the Biocultural Heritage Network of CONACYT, whose ethical and social principles and academic proposals were aligned with those of the museum, but above all, with those of the actors directly involved in the traditional practice of the painted tortilla.

To date, the museum is working on different strategies to protect, dignify and recover this collective practice closely linked to the ritual environment of the central basin of the Laja River and its natural resources.
